For the next round qualified the team with stronger competitive spirit, which had both the initiative and more goal chances in the return game. The game was opened by the Newcastle attack led by Solana in the second minute. But after this chance, the home team domineered all through the game. Partisan's domination is best illustrated by corner kicks ratio in the first half, 9:0 in their favour. Precisely following that ninth corner kick, Nenad Bjekovic hit Newcastle's goal-post from two meters.
In the second half Partizan's coach introduced the third forward player into the team, resulting in stronger attacks on guests' goal. In the 53rd minute Batty knocked down Ivic in the sixteen meter. Much the same as in the first game, Rasovic performed perfectly on the eleven-meter line, resulting in 1:0.
The Newcastle's coach Ruud Gullit attempted to turn the score by introducing forward player Albert. In the 90th minute he shot at the Partizan's goal, but goal-keeper Damjanac intervened excellently, which was the sign for over 30,000 spectators to start celebrating, all watching finish of the game up on their feet.
