Jugovic (8) congratulated by his teammates

The first goal of the Yugoslav national team football player Vladimir Jugovic in the second leg of the match between the Spanish teams Athletic Madrid and Real Sociedad in the UEFA Cup will be remembered. The second Yugoslav in the team of Athletic, Zoran Njegus made a break through the right side and send the ball into the penalty area. Jugovic received the ball and though turned to the goal with his back, using "scissors" scored from 5-6 meters. He was also in the centre of attention in the last

minute of the first half when he scored again, this time from the penalty. Unfortunately, immediately after the goal he felt a pain in his leg and had to leave the game. The doctors say it is a muscle injury and he will be away from playing about a month. In spite of the fact that they remained without Jugovic, Athletic succeeded to win and eliminate the guests from Sociedad from further competition (the first leg was 2-1 for Real but at the end it was 4-1 for Athletic). The best player in the defeated team was Darko Kovacevic who assisted Garcia to score the only goal for Real.

The Spanish Selta eliminated, besides Aston Vila, another English team from the UEFA Cup. In a difficult game in Liverpool, Selta surprised the hosts and won 1-0. With the total 4-1 Selta qualified for the quarter-finals. The guests played the game which did not suit the English, short passes, keeping the game at no less than 25 meters from their own goal. Moreover, they used a lot of free room in the Liverpool defence and in one of the counter attacks, Israeli Reviva scored the winning goal in 51st minute. One of the best players in the Selta defence was Yugoslav national team player Goran Corovic who had a big fight with Owen and other Liverpool players but did his job without a single mistake.

All participants in the quarter-finals of the Champions' League are known. The Spanish champion Real Madrid, with Predrag Mijatovic, won in the last round of the group C Russian Spartak from Moscow 2-1 (1-0), which was enough to qualify for the quarter-finals being one of the two best ranked teams in the group.

Greek Olympiakos was losing to Croatia in Zagreb 0-1 after the first half, but the guest succeeded to equalize in the second half and to be first in the group A. Among the Yugoslavs, there were Djordjevic and Gogic who played for Olympiakos and coach Dusko Bajevic.

As a host, Porto won overwhelmingly 3-0 Ajax from Holland which is the most unpleasant surprise in the Champions' League competition this year. In the game without any significance, one of the goals for the hosts was scored by Ljubinko Drulovic.
