Winner of "Toyota Cup" 1991: FC Red Star |
Since December 8, 1991, the National Olympic stadium in Tokyo has remained as the place of the biggest success of the Yugoslav and Serbian football. Players of Belgrade's Red Star, by winning 3:0 over the champion of South America, the Chilean Colo Colo, won the Intercontinental "Toyota Cup" and became unofficial world champions.
By the triumph in Tokyo, the Yugoslav club had finished the most successful year in its history. Let us remind you, on May 29, the same year, Red Star, in the Italian coastal town of Bari, after a dramatic penalty series, beat the French Olympic of Marseilles, in the finals of European Champions Cup, concluding in the most brilliant way its superior passing through the football Europe.
Red Star played the match in a style in which it had previously won the title of the best European team. Technical superiority and recognizable imagination brought result in the 19th minute of the game. Vladimir Jugovic, after an excellent pass by Dejan Savicevic, scored the first goal in the Chileans' net. Savicevic, who had played the first half for the football textbooks, in the 44th minute responded to a provocation by an opponent player, and had to leave the game earlier, due to the red card.
The Yugoslav fans with anxiety expected the beginning of the second half, because Colo Colo had an advantage in the field and was surely resolute to give it its best in the second half. However, Jugovic, with his second goal, in 59th minute announced the resolution of the result dilemma. The grand finish on the excellent game and historical win, was given by the then first scorer in Europe, Darko Pancev, in the 72nd minute, after the Sinisa Mihajlovic made his way along the right side and made an excellent pass.
Ilija Najdoski received the cup and Vladimir Jugovic was proclaimed the best player of the match.
The years have passed, but a live memory on that generation of Red Star and its triumphant campaign on the football peak of the world has remained.
