Yugoslav basketball player Cakic to join junior world team

Belgrade, February 1 - Goran Cakic (1980, 207) of the Beobanka Belgrade basketball club has been selected to play on the junior world team against the junior U.S. team in Indianapolis on April 2, world team coach Alessandro Gamba of Italy decided on Tuesday.

The world team is headed by Gamba and Yugoslavia's Marin Sedlacek.

This will be the 6th match between the world's best juniors and the junior U.S. team. All have been played in the United States, with the Americans winning 3 of the 5 games played so far.


Yugoslavia vs Russia in the first round



Sidney, Australia, January 29 - The drawing for the Basketball tournament at the Olympic games took place at the Olympic hall. The world champion Yugoslavia is in the group B with the national selections of Russia, Angola, Canada, Australia and Spain. The Yugoslav opponent in the first game will be the runner-up from the last World championship, the national team of Russia.

The national teams of the USA, Lithuania, New Zealand, China, France and Italy are in the group A. The tournament will start on the 17th September. Four best teams from both groups will go to the quarterfinals where the following pairs are A1-B4, A2-B3, B3-B2 and A4-B1. The winners from those matches will play at the semi-finals.
