England - Yugoslavia 3-0

Dejan Stankovic (Yugoslavia)

Barcelona, Spain, March 29th - Yugoslav national football team failed to qualify for the European Under-21 Championship finals in Slovakia, since it was defeated by the England national team in Barcelona with the score 0-3.

Yugoslavia was an equal rival, but the opponent knew how to take advantage of the Yugoslav team defense naïve play. If Dejan Stankovic had succeeded to score the goal in the 10th minute when the score was 0-0, the match might have taken completely different course. This way, we can only regret the fact that this undoubtedly talented generation, which failed to earn a name for itself due to various circumstances, had missed an opportunity.

GOALS

1-0 (24) - Gerrard found Heskey on the left with a quick free kick. Heskey picked out Campbell in a central position, and he fired low into the bottom left- hand corner.

2-0 (49) - The referee awarded a penalty for handball after a high ball became trapped between the bodies of Yugoslav defender Tanasijevic and Hendrie, and Lampard drove the spot-kick high into the roof of the net.

3-0 (65) - Dyer found Johnson out on the left, and he played the ball inside to Hendrie, who shot low into the corner.
