RED STAR Belgrade - Dinamo Kiev 1-1

Bialkevich (R, Dinamo Kiev) celebrates his goal with Yashkin

European Football Champions' League, third qualifying round, second leg match: RED STAR Belgrade (Yugoslavia) - DINAMO Kiev (Ukraine) 1-1 (1-1)

Belgrade, August 23 - Yugoslav champions Red Star Belgrade failed to advance to the UEFA Champions' League as they drew 1-1 with Ukrainian FC Dinamo Kiev in Belgrade (first match in Kiev 0-0).

The Yugoslavs controlled much of the first period, and their reward came in the 23rd minute when Goran Drulic held off the challenge of Yuriy Dmytrulin to spread the ball wide to his left into the path of Branko Boskovic, who hit the ball left-footed and low past Vyacheslav Kernozenko in the Dinamo goal from 16 metres. However, Red Star failed to hold onto their lead, and gifted Dinamo their equaliser and crucial away goal after 33 minutes when they failed to clear the ball from defence, and Aliaksandr Khatskevich seized possession to pass to Valiantsin Bialkevich to lob over the diving Aleksandar Kocic from ten metres.

Dinamo managed to retain possession for long periods during the opening exchanges of the second period as the home side's onslaught on the Ukrainian goal failed to materialise.

Red Star gradually fought their way back into the game as their midfield and attack belatedly found some forward momentum in the final 20 minutes of the match. Ivan Gvozdenovic's 20-metre shot was narrowly over Kernozenko's goal as Dinamo's defence retreated in the 70th minute. Then Milenko Acimovic shot inches wide of the target with a low shot from the left corner of the penalty area in three minutes later as the Yugoslavs became gradually more desperate. But Dinamo held on as they soaked up all Red Star had to offer with substitute Dragan Stevanovic firing wide with the last chance of the match four minutes from time.
