LUXEMBOURG, September 3 - Yugoslavia opened their World
Cup qualifying campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over
European group one part-timers Luxembourg on Sunday.
Two powerful headers, by Parma's Savo Milosevic after four
minutes and Deportivo La Coruna midfielder Slavisa Jokanovic on
26 minutes, were enough for the Euro 2000 quarter-finalists.
Luxembourg, 138th in FIFA's world rankings, never looked
likely to trouble the visitors, who were under new coach Ilija
Petkovic.
The hosts did have a couple of bright moments, notably when
playmaker Luc Holtz hit the bar with a fierce hooked shot midway
through the first half.
But most of the action was just outside the Luxembourg area,
where the home defenders worked tirelessly to keep the Yugoslav
attack at bay.
Milosevic wasted two good chances in the second half and
Luxembourg goalkeeper Alija Besic was constantly in the thick of
the action.
