Serb police injured in clash with Red Star fans
Belgrade, January 28 (Politika/Reuters) - Thirteen Serb police were
injured on Saturday night when Red Star fans armed with stones
and sticks went on the rampage ahead of a basketball match with
arch rivals Partizan, Belgrade media reported on Sunday.
Some 300 Red Star fans, angry because they were unable to
get tickets for the match, clashed with police in front of the
sports hall in Belgrade, daily Politika said. They demolished
entrances to the hall and several parked vehicles.
Partizan had decided not to distribute free tickets to
prevent any violence between fans of the two rival teams.
They were anxious to avoid a repeat of the trouble at a Red
Star-Partizan football derby last October when fans invaded the
pitch, fought and attacked players.
Slobodan Ivanovic director of the private clinic Anlave,
whose ambulances were on duty in front of the hall, said 13
police were treated on Saturday night, mostly for head and face
injuries and one for a fractured arm, Beta news agency reported.
He said the injuries were mostly caused by stones, sticks
and other blunt objects. Four policemen were transferred to the
Belgrade emergency centre but were later released, he said.
