YUGOSLAVIA - Iceland 31-27 (15-10)

Nedeljko Jovanovic (YUGOSLAVIA) scores 7 goals

Toulouse, FRANCE, January 31st - Yugoslavia beat Iceland 31-27 (halftime 15-10) in Toulouse, France, on Wednesday to go on to the quarterfinals of the 17th World Handball Championships.

Yugoslavia got of to a red hot start, taking a 5-1 lead after 10 minutes of the match. Iceland struggled on defence, giving the Yugoslavs a lot of easy shots. Only a strong performance from goalkeeper Hrafnkelsson, who had eight saves before the break, kept Iceland's hope alive. The score was 15-10 for Yugoslavia at the half.

After the break Yugoslavia hung on to their lead, behind great play from Nedeljko Jovanovic and Dragan Skrbic playing at the line. It didn't matter that Einar Örn Jonsson scored three straight to make it 16-20. Yugoslavia hung on, going 18-21, then 19-23, 21-25 and finally 27-31 in the end.

In the quarterfinal match Yugoslavia will face Spain, in Toulouse, on February 1st.
