YUGOSLAVIA - Spain 26-24 (13-10)

Matic (YUG) shots over Spain's Hernandez (left) and Lozano

Toulouse, FRANCE, February 2 - Yugoslavia beat Spain 26-24 (halftime 13-10) in Toulouse, France, late on Thursday, to go on to the semi-finals of the 17th World Handball Championships.

In the semi-finals, Yugoslavia will be playing the Swedish national team.

Led by the brilliant Nedeljko Jovanovic and the strong play of Dragan Skrbic, Yugoslavia came out firing. Even if the Spaniards knew the pair should be stopped, they just could not do it.

It did not matter that Enric Masip made the two first goals of the game, and Dujshebaev added one to give Spain a 3-0 lead. The Yugoslavs made a strong comeback. The first of the night, came from Jovanovic, who made a penalty five minutes into the game.

Lapcevic and Skrbic both scored for Yugoslavia to bring the game even at 3-3.

Garralda then scored once, to give Spain the lead for the last time. From there on Yugoslavia had the game. Lisicic, Skrbic, Jovanovic and Lisicic again, all contributed, as Yugoslavia was three ahead at the half, 13-10.

The very beginning of the second half was close before Yugoslavia tightened the grip, taking the lead of five goals, 19-14.

It did not matter that Spain rallied back behind scorers Gerralda and Hernández, to pull within one with only a few minutes to go. In the end the Yugoslav players could not be beaten, hanging on to a 26-24 win.

QUOTES...

"We fulfilled everything we had agreed. Above all, we stopped the Spanish from playing dangerous counterattacks. In the same time, we controlled the match with extremely good defence, but it is my opinion that we won the match due to the excellent attack." (Branislav Pokrajac, Yugoslavia's coach)

"The truth is we were lucky, but it is known that luck is with the courage and good ones. We have achieved this with the power of our team and unselfish struggle. We deserved to play in the semi-finals." (Vladan Matic, Yugoslavia's player)
