Belgrade, YUGOSLAVIA, February 20 (agencies) - The abandoned derby of the football championship between Red Star and Partizan is to be played, according to today's agreement in the Serbian Government, on March 7, and spring part of the football championship is to start on February 24.
On the basis of today's agreement between the representatives of the two clubs and the Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic it was said that the Serbian Government and the Ministry of Interior Affairs would ensure the necessary conditions for playing the forthcoming match of two clubs from Belgrade without an incident.
"We have gladly accepted the invitation of the Prime Minister Djindjic to talk and find a comprmise. Our wish is that tension, present for months, calms down and to turn towards the sportlike solution", the President of Red Star Dragan Dzajic said at the press conference after the meeting.
A conciliatory tone prevailed from Partizan too as managing
board director Ivan Curkovic said it was time to forget the past
and promised a spectacle for the fans on March 7.
"It was a timely initiative by Mr Djindjic and we are very
happy with the outcome. We decided to put our differences aside to save the Belgrade derby and treat the fans to a football feast," he said.
