Tokyo, JAPAN, March 21 (Reuters) - Japan-based Yugoslav veteran
Dragan Stojkovic has not given up hope of continuing his
international career this summer, despite being left out of the
latest national squad.
The 36-year-old playmaker - who has played for Nagoya
Grampus Eight since 1994 - did not feature in the first squad
to be announced by new national coach Milovan Djoric for
upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland and Slovenia.
But he was quoted in Wednesday's English-language Daily
Yomiuri newspaper as saying he had not ruled out a recall when
Yugoslavia join Paraguay in Japan's annual three-nation Kirin
Cup tournament in June and July.
"My wish is to participate in this tournament, especially
as we play the last game against Japan, but we will see,"
Stojkovic said.
"I spoke to the coach last week and he said he wanted to
prove something with younger players. I said OK, no problem. I
wished him and the team good luck."
Stojkovic played for Yugoslavia in the 1990 and 1998 World
Cups and was also captain at Euro 2000.
In the Kirin Cup, Paraguay will play Yugoslavia on June 28
and Japan on July 1, with Japan meeting Yugoslavia on July 4.
