Matsumoto, JAPAN, May 13 - Japan took the first set behind the inspired play of left-handed Takahiro Yamamoto.

Encouraged with the first-set win, Japan continued their enthusiastic play in the second set, but Yugoslava's height and strength began to wear down the host team. Andrija Geric put Yugoslavia ahead with a quick spike at 14-13 and then added two service aces as the visitors surged away with six straight points.

Japan countered by bringing in substitute Nobuharu Saito but the 205-centimeter tall attacker could not turn the momentum around as Yugoslavia evened the match 25-19.

In the third set, Yugoslavia wanted to keep its momentum going, but four straight points in the middle of the set, including two service aces by Japanese captain Hosokawa, kept the match close. Japan's efforts to take the lead, however, were thwarted by an untimely error or a serve sailing out of bounds as Yugoslavia holds on 25-23.

The wheels came off the cart for Japan in the fourth set as Yugoslavia took control of the match behind the back court attacks of Ivan Miljkovic and hard-hitting captain Goran Vujevic for a 25-16 win.
