London, ENGLAND, June 12 (Reuters) - Yugoslav Jelena Dokic has been named the WTA Tour's Player of the Month for May, the Tour said on Tuesday.
Dokic narrowly edged out Amelie Mauresmo for the monthly award on the strength of her first WTA Tour singles title at the Italian Open.
Dokic upset Mauresmo in her first appearance in a final, 7-6 6-1. The
victory vaulted Dokic into the top-20 in the world rankings for the first
time in her career.
Dokic's outstanding month also included reaching the semifinals in
Hamburg in which she defeated Magdalena Maleeva and Arantxa
Sanchez-Vicario before falling to eventual champion Venus Williams.
She also took Jennifer Capriati to three sets in
their second round match in Berlin before falling 7-5 3-6 6-4.
Dokic has a 16-7 record this season and is ranked eighth in 2001 prize
money with $375,951. She is the second seed at this week's Edgbaston
Open in Birmingham, England.
