Red Star's Matijasevic and Gvozdenovic challenge Kostyshin |
Belgrade, September 27 (DSA) - For the second successive year Kyiv teams became unlucky opponents for Yugoslavian Red Star. Last year Dynamo Kyiv knocked them out the Champions
League, and this time CSKA Kyiv stood up on their way.
As Kyiv side had a little advantage thanks to the 3-2 win at home, they stepped into the game determined to hold it on. The host took control over the game from the first minutes and constantly pressed on the rival's goal. They were creating and missing one opportunity after another. In the 35th minute CSKA's first attack of the match might have put the guests ahead as Sergiy Zakarlyuka hit a post.
After the break Red Star's dominance became overwhelming. Ivan Gvozdenovic and Mikhajlo Pjanovic squandered just wonderful chances to open the score.
CSKA defense looked solid and their goalkeeper Vyacheslav Kernozenko was simply outstanding. In injury time (by the way, the referee added about nine minutes) Zakarlyuka could have put the matter beyond doubt but keeper Vladimir Disljenkovic made a great save.
CSKA Kyiv, which take last but one place in Ukrainian championship, made kind of a miracle reaching UEFA Cup second round.
