Tokyo, JAPAN, November 24 (fivb.ch) - Brazil secured the runner-up finishing and the US$250,000 prize after slashing Yugoslavia 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-22) on Saturday.
However it is mission impossible for the winless Argentina to topple the unbeaten Cuba tomorrow, which could award the trophy to Brazil, who also needs to beat Japan on Sunday.
Cuba has eight points from four wins while Brazil, who lost 3-2 to Cuba on Friday, has seven points on a 3-1 record. Yugoslavia (2-2) slumped to the fourth place behind its Sunday's opponent Korea (2-2).
Brazil got slowly into the game but claimed the control with a 7-1 run to be up at 12-9. Veteran Giovane Gavio finished the dramatic first set with a powerful strike winner.
Henrique Randow nailed down two successive servers and put Brazil ahead at 7-4 with four straight points at the beginning of the second set, which they won by 25-20.
The listless Yugoslavia showed no sign of recovery from its slump in the third set while defending champion Brazil kept onto its consistence to have the good of the game.
