Belgrade, December 27 - Dejan Savicevic will continue to coach Yugoslavia after the leading contender for the job, Dusan Bajevic, refused to quit Greek club
PAOK.
"We were not able to propose an appropriate candidate as a
long-term solution at the moment," explained Yugoslav FA (FAY)
president Dragan Stojkovic.
Savicevic agreed to stand down earlier this month after Yugoslavia
failed to qualify for next summer's World Cup.
But after more than two weeks of deliberations, the FAY
announced that he would retain his position. "Until we have a
long-term solution, we propose that Savicevic retains the job,"
Stojkovic said.
The FAY will re-evaluate the situation in the summer, when
Bajevic's contract in Greece comes to an end.
"Dusan Bajevic remains one of the most serious candidates," the
FAY chief explained.
"I spoke by phone with him yesterday," Stojkovic added. "We talked correctly. I didn't promise him that we will wait until June, nor has he promised us that he will accept the position then."
Stojkovic explained: "We don't have to decide anything fast. Dejan
Savicevic has already led the national team and has my full
support.
"He has shown that he is brave, devoted to football and prepared to
take over responsible jobs. I am certain that our national team is in
safe hands."
