Lisbon, PORTUGAL, September 19 (AP) - Partizan Belgrade punished Sporting Lisbon's defensive blunders to win 3-1 in Portugal in a UEFA Cup first-round, first-leg game
Thursday.
Sporting buckled under Partizan's early pressure, defender Hugo Vieira
botching a clearance and shooting the ball into his own goal to hand the visitor
advantage after 12 minutes.
The home team looked ragged and unable to dent the Yugoslav defense until
pacey Spanish striker Tonito Gonzalez, making a rare start for Sporting, ran to
meet a long downfield pass by Paulo Bento and level the score in the 25th
minute.
But 10 minutes before the break Sporting's defense crumbled again and allowed
Andrija Delibasic, unmarked in the penalty area, to put Partizan back into the
lead.
Nenad Miskovic had plenty of time inside the Sporting area to seal the result
after 78 minutes.
Red Star Belgrade - Chievo Verona 0-0
Belgrade, September 19 (AP) - Red Star of Belgrade played a scoreless draw
against AC Chievo from Verona in an unexciting game, a result that was
ultimately a success for the Italians.
Red Star got off to a poor start as it failed to develop several good opportunities
in the opening minutes.
Its midfielder Dragan Bogavac was downed in the penalty area in the 27th
minute but his teammate Mihajlo Pjanovic, who got to shoot the penalty quick,
squandered the opportunity, sending the ball straight into the arms of Chievo's
goalie, Cristiano Lupatelli.
In an equalizer of sorts, Massimo Marazzina was fouled at Red Star's goal in
the 61st, but Chievo's Eugenio Corini than missed his penalty kick as Red
Star's goalie, Vladimir Disljenkovic repelled the ball almost effortlessly.
The 1991 European Champions' winner, Red Star dominated most of the game
but disappointed the home crowd of some 30,000 spectators as it failed to
defeat the team from a tiny suburb of Verona. AC Chievo exceeded all
expectations last season, sealing a UEFA Cup berth in its first ever topflight
campaign.
Ipswich - Sartid 1-1
Ipswich, ENGLAND, September 19 (AP) - Division One Ipswich stretched its unbeaten European
home record to 30 games on Thursday yet was still held 1-1 by Yugoslav team
Sartid in the UEFA Cup.
Relegated last season from the Premier League, George Burley's team was
allowed a place in the competition through UEFA's Fair Play awards.
Powerhouse clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Inter Milan and
Lazio had all failed to win at Portman Road. But that record appeared to be
going when Nenad Mirosavljevic scored after 32 minutes for the visitor in this
first round, first leg game.
But Alun Armstrong salvaged a tie for Ipswich with a 56th minute goal and the
two teams meet again on even terms at Smederevo in two weeks time.
