Springfield, UNITED STATES, March 4 (AP) - Former European stars Drazen Dalipagic and Dino Meneghin and Spanish coach Pedro Ferrandiz have been proposed for election to the Basketball Hall of Fame by its International Committee.
Dalipagic, a high-scoring guard, played for Partizan Belgrade in the former Yugoslavia, and in Italy. He was named the European Player of the Year in 1977, '78 and '80 and earned 12 medals in European, world and Olympic competition, including a gold medal for Yugoslavia in the 1980 Olympics.
Meneghin played on four Italian Olympic teams from 1976-84. He led his Italian club teams to seven championships and four Intercontinental Cup championships.
Ferrandiz, who brought the fast-break to European basketball, compiled a 427-90 record during his 15-year coaching career with Real Madrid, Hesperia and the Spanish national team, leading Real Madrid to 12 Spanish titles and four European Club championships. He also served as the first president of the World Association of Basketball Coaches in 1976.
To be presented to the Honors Committee, finalists need five votes from separate seven-member screening committees set up to consider veterans, women, the international game and the North American game.
To be elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame, a person needs 18 votes from the 24-member Honors Committee.
This September's inductees are to be announced April 7 at the college basketball Final Four in New Orleans.
