Serbia-Montenegro - Italy 5-6

Vujasinovic (SM) shoots past Rath (Italy)

Barcelona, SPAIN, July 24 (fina.org) - Three separate injuries were sustained and two Serbia & Montenegro players were suspended from the game during a riotous final quarter in the second semifinal. Serbia & Montenegro dominated the opening six minutes with Dejan Savic and Vladimir Vujasinovic scoring. Alberto Angelini responded late in the period. Serbian goalkeeper Denis Sefik dislocated a finger in his right hand but had it strapped and continued. Then Bogdan Rath on extra and Robert Calcaterra, off a post position, rocketed Italy to a 3-2 lead by halftime. Boris Zlokovic scored from centre forward for 3-3 at 0:31. Goran Fiorentini turned his player and shot on time but his lob hit the crossbar. Roberto Calcaterra had another on the first attack of the fourth, losing his opponent and fading to a post to receive the cross pass and score. A Serbian player was ejected for a kick (shown on the big screen in living colour) and Italy took the timeout but the first shot was deflected and the second blocked. Aleksandar Ciric gave a look-away pass to Zlokovic on extra in front of goal to level at 4-4, 3:07 from time. Maurizio Felugo was hit in the head and Ciric ejected from the game. On the subsequent extra-man Rath scored for 5-4 at 1:47.Serbia took a timeout but missed the scoring chance. On the Italian attack Aleksandar Sapic was sent for striking Fabio Bencivenga (another big-screen replay). The Serbs called a tactical illegal timeout and before the shot was taken, Sefik was excluded for not taking his place in goal correctly. The Serbian team was sent back to its bench and Vanja Udovicic swam into goal. Carlo Silipo converted the penalty for 6-4 to the roar of the largely Italian crowd. Predrag Jokic earned a penalty at the other end and converted for 6-5. Serbian players then approached the referee but were restrained by their team staff.
