Novi Sad, August 19 (TEAMtalk) - BelgradeUnder-21s endured a miserable evening as Serbia & Montenegro gave them a 3-0 lesson in an Under-21 European Championships qualifier.
It is seven years since Wales Under-21s won two games on the trot but that was the record they took into this Uefa qualifier on a ground some 50 miles outside Belgrade.
But they found a Serbia & Montenegro side, beaten only once in the competition so far, a tough challenge.
It was no surprise that Wales were under intense pressure right from the start when inside a minute Gillingham's young goalkeeper Jason Brown had to dive to his right to hold a close-range shot from Andrija Delibasic and then 60 seconds later Shaun Pejic had to clear off the line from Danko Lazovic.
Wales could not withstand the pressure for much longer and finally Serbia went ahead after 10 minutes.
Lazovic got away from Michael Price, cut in and forced a fine save from Brown but the ball bounced out to Igor Matic, whose shot deflected wildly away from Brown as he regained his feet.
But Wales should have equalised on 32 minutes when a free-kick from Lee Fowler arched into the box to be met by Matthew Rees, unmarked six yards out, but the big Millwall defender mis-hit his shot and keeper Vladimir Disljenkovic scrambled the ball away.
Wales had begun the second half looking lively and competitive but Serbia grabbed their second on the hour when the ball again came over from the right and Danko Lazovic fired in from close range.
Serbia's relentless pressure continued as Wales wilted in the oppressive heat. And the hosts made it three when Dejan Milovanovic drove home a free-kick from the edge of the box after 76 minutes.
Wales luck was underlined when they wasted a rare chance nine minutes from time when Matthew Williams got away down the right and crossed for the unmarked Gall coming at the far post but he lifted his 12-yard shot over.
