Plock, POLAND, November 15, 2003 (REUTERS) - Poland followed up their surprise 3-1 win against Italy with a thrilling 4-3 victory at the expense of Serbia and Montenegro on Sunday.
Goals from strikers Andrzej Niedzielan and Grzegorz Rasiak on 27 and 30 minutes gave the home side a 2-0 half-time lead which they were never to relinquish, despite the visitors' never-say-die attitude.
Inspired by energetic performances from wingers Kamil Kosowski and Jacek Krzynowek, Poland enjoyed the upper hand and although S.S. Lazio's Dejan Stankovic pulled a goal back with a deflected free-kick in the 70th minute, Kosowski capped a fine performance with a strike from the edge of the box three minutes later.
Three goals followed in the last 12 minutes as both coaches indulged in a string of substitutions. Zvonimir Vukic scored the visitors' second but Maciej Zurawski quickly restored Poland's two-goal advantage. But the home side were unable to rest on their laurels as Ivica Iliev made it 4-3 to set up a barnstorming finish.
