Lothar Matthaus resigns

Belgrade, December 13, 2003 - Lothar Matthaus has resigned as FC Partizan Belgrade manager, the club said in a statement released Saturday.
According to the statement, Matthaus resigned "for personal reasons".
The 42-year-old was appointed manager of the Belgrade club in December 2002. Matthaus is an icon in Belgrade after guiding the side to the domestic championship in Serbia and Montenegro and then leading the club into the Champions League in 2003 for the first time in their history.
Sources close to Partizan said that Matthaus resigned because he will take over the Hungarian national team.
