Belgrade, Dec 18, 2003 - The office of the board responsible for marking the 200th anniversary of the First Serbian Uprising and modern Serbian statehood presented today the main celebratory programme "Serbia 1804-2004" which will take place on Feb 14-16, 2004.
Deputy Minister of Culture and Media Milosav Marinkovic, who is in charge of organising the programme, told a press conference today that the celebration is envisaged to run as a series of cultural events inspired by the Serbian tradition and history.
On the first day of the celebration, Feb 14, the National Theatre in Belgrade will premier the first Serbian feature movie "Life and Work of Immortal Vozd Karadjordje" shot in 1911 and directed by Ilija Stanojevic. A copy of the 47-minute film was recently discovered at the Vienna film archive.
The Archive of Belgrade will present a book entitled "Serbia 1804-2004." One of the authors of the book, Branka Prpa, said that this project involved the work of many historians and expressed the hope that the book would serve as a kind of encyclopedia on the events that have taken place in Serbia over the past two centuries.
On the second day of the celebration, Feb 15, the Serbian Historical Museum in Orasac will organise an exhibition presenting important events and prominent persons from the 1804-1813 period, Director of the museum Andreja Vujinovic announced. The First Serbian Uprising broke out in 1804 in Orasac.
A musical entitled "Ferry," written by Goran Petrovic and directed by Kokan Mladenovic, will be performed outside the school in Orasac. The music for the play was composed by Zoran Hristic.
A gala concert "Europe in Belgrade" performed by the Belgrade and Budapest philharmonic orchestras will take place at the Sava Centre. The night opens with Beethoven's "Eroica" and will close with "Ode to Joy."
On Feb 16, an international jazz concert follows. The music with Serbian folk and Balkan motives was prepared by Dusko Gojkovic.
The Radio-Television Serbia will directly broadcast the programme and will also screen a TV series, "On the Path of Karadjordje." The TV programme will also include a series of quizzes and shows dedicated to the jubilee.
