Serbia raises sugar import tariffs

Belgrade, Feb 19, 2003 - The Serbian government has adopted a new police bill and decided to raise tariffs on sugar imports from the European Union (EU) from 10 dinars per kilo to 18 dinars per kilo, as part of efforts to protect domestic sugar industry.

The move is due to the EU's decision to suspend preferential imports of Serbian sugar, reads a statement form the government.

At the session on Thursday, the government also dismissed Ljubomir Geric as general manager of the state owned power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) and appointed Dragojlo Bazalc as acting general manager.

The government also adopted a police bill and forwarded it to the parliament.
